Forthcoming book: The new financial subject

The New Financial Subject: Of Habit, Class, and the Milieu.
Solange Manche, SUNY Press 2027.

The New Financial Subject draws on contemporary French thought to reflect on the ways finance is altering the human condition. Solange Manche argues that the work of Catherine Malabou, Bernard Stiegler, and Frédéric Lordon offers a new way of understanding how markets shape our environment, and that their thought is emblematic of a broader change in the history of French philosophy, itself brought about by a new temporality of finance. Tracing the political history of twentieth and twenty-first century French philosophy in relation to the French reception of Hegel, Marx, and Spinoza, she shows how these thinkers distinguish themselves from a previous generation in their attempt to revive a certain notion of anthropology and reality. Building on Malabou, Stiegler, and Lordon alongside new developments in heterodox economics, The New Financial Subject argues that finance has introduced a new class division of time, along the lines of portfolio diversification, that significantly reduces the agency of the asset-poor.
